Book’s Music podcast #349 by Booksmusic on Mixcloud
It’s the radio show that radio forgot… which is why it’s online. It’s called Book’s Music, and this is the 349th edition, a show featuring a wide range of music and me talking about a bunch of it. Diversity is always an essential key here. so come in in.
You like pie? In the words of my late grandpa, “I like pie”. We here in the United States know nothing about true maple syrup, something our friends in the country above us know all too well. Why not combine the two and… no, not pour maple syrup on a piece of pie, but make a maple syrup pie? That sounds incredibly rich, and maybe that’s the point, but now you can make one in the comfort of your home. This video is part of the Kitchen Vignettes series on PBS Food.
“Teenager”? If you are one, this song may become the anthem for you and your friends. It’s the new song by The Rich Hands and it has been turned into a video, as you can see above. What’s stopping you? Press play, already, and if you’re feeling this immensely, you can download it for free below, while supplies last.
The group are currently in Austin, Texas for SXSW in preparation of their Out Of My Head album to be released by Fountain and Burger Records.
DJ Cooley produced “Bruh Man” by Alec Burnright, which will appear on his forthcoming street album The Man With Faux Pas, due out on the 15th of this month. The song sounds big and vibrant, and that’s all within the first eight lines.
Cool cover, cool artist name, alluring title but I found Scraps’ Electric Ocean (Fire) to be slightly uneven and at times a bit stodgy. What I got out of their music is that they love new wave or early 80′s pop, and they find themselves wanting to bathe in it until their fingers shrivel up, and nothing wrong with that. What clashes is the tentative weariness of the music and the dreariness of the vocals. Normally it would be a perfect match but I felt it was going nowhere. It would be nice to say “going nowhere fast” but it didn’t even move on that speedy. Oddly enough, I found the instrumental portions to be very nice, it would have been cool if they went more down that route. I think the vocalist is effective, but just not with this set of musicians backing her.
Norway’s Nocturnal Breed have been teasing metal heads with bursts of magic, hints of what would be coming up on their album Napalm Nights. The LP is now out in Europe and they’ve decided to share it as a stream for the rest of the world, which you may listen to by heading to Brooklyn Vegan. It will be digitally available in North America next week Tuesday, and hard copy will hit on or around April 1st.
Frankenstein, originally a doctor, is a producer/rapper with a song called “The Roughtalk”. No word on if his monster handles beats but for this song he does the production, with Luminous dropping some verbage. The song is an unreleased track from 1994 that surfaces today, which will find its way on The Science Of Sound compilation due out next week Tuesday.
Lights & Motion’s Reanimation album (my review of which can be read by clicking here) was released about a year ago and it is still energizing everyone who discovers them for the first time. The band’s voyage continues with a video for “The March”, and if you haven’t been taken to places after hearing this, you may find yourself in a new city upon its conclusion.
Forever is the new EP by Godz Chyld and from it is the Jordan River Banks-produced title track. It’s a bit of cross-Atlantic communication going on here, with Godz Chyld representing the Boogie Down Bronx while Jordan River Banks is Amsterdam by nature.
Bitch, do you know who this is? This is clipping. and from their forthcoming second album, their first for Sub Pop, is a track they put together with Cocc Pistol Cree called “Work Work”. I generally don’t like lyric videos, since there is an overwhelming amount of them in circulation but this is clipping. so I figured hey, it’s a chance to share their song so I’ll post it. No harm done.
The album is called CLPPNG and it will be released on June 10th. If you pre-order a copy from Sub Pop, you will get a bonus 45 with “Ends” on the A_side and a non-LP track called “Brian”, which features good ol’ Brian “Black Pus” Chippendale of Brian “Black Pus” Chippendale fame. Vinyl and CD pressings can be pre-ordered here, while a vinyl or CD bundle with T-shirt can be pre-ordered there.

Singer Kelis is not only a foodie, but a cook who has her own show on the Cooking Channel. She will be doing the schmoozathon that is SXSW, and many will be there not only to network and whatnot, but also to try out some of Austin, Texas’ fine food truck/food cart scene. While Kelis plans on doing a few performance during her stay (see dates below), she will be also taking part in the food trucks as well by making and serving food on Thursday and Friday. You’ll have to follow her on Twitter by clicking to @iamkelis and watch her timeline to know when and where her food truck will be. If you’re only going to show up just to catch a glimpse of a car, don’t do it. If you want to try some good food, say hello and then give thanks for what she put together, then follow her.
